Chicago Greystones

Chicago Greystones

The Greystone: Chicago’s most iconic building style that has developed nationwide notoriety due to its unique, sophisticated appearance. These understated yet beautiful homes are a staple in many Chicago neighborhoods in the same way that brownstones are in New York.

Contrary to popular belief, the term “Greystone” actually has little to do with the size, type, or location of the home; rather, it refers to the limestone building material that is used on the home’s facade, giving the homes their namesake “grey” appearance. At Middlefork, we have built and renovated a number of greystones and they’ve truly become some of our favorite projects to work on! Creating or preserving a home that reflects a piece of Chicago history makes us proud Chicagoans and these homes provide a bit of beauty to any neighborhood they grace.

Journey of a Chicago Home Renovation

When it comes to Chicago home renovation, there’s a lot more to the story than just tearing down walls and fitting new finishes. Chicago is a city that is wonderfully rich with history, which adds a layer of complexity in the world of home construction: historic and landmarked buildings.

Seeing as there aren’t many empty lots to build on in our area, we often work with existing structures to do large-scale home renovations and give outdated homes a major facelift. When that existing structure has been deemed an official landmarked building, there are several more hoops to jump through and rules to abide by during the renovation process.

Living in the Lincoln Park Neighborhood

“Cabin fever is an idiomatic term for a claustrophobic reaction that takes place when a person or group is isolated or shut in a small space with nothing to do for an extended period.”

Living in a colder climate Chicagoans relate to “cabin fever”. The weather teases us at this time of the year with promises of warmer, sunnier days and they are right around the corner.
